Balinese name

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Balinese name is a naming system used by the Balinese people of Bali, Indonesia and the Western parts of neighboring Lombok, Indonesia. Since most Balinese are Hindus, most names are Hindi or Sanskrit, while others still use native Balinese ones. Regardless of being male or female, each person receives one of four names based on birth order. Though there are significant variations in the four names of Balinese people, some due to caste membership, and others due to regional customns and variations in the Balinese language between the Noerth ansd the South of the island, there are four names in Balinese culture that are repeated frequently. The firstborn is "Wayan" (or Yan, for short), second is "Made," third is "Nyoman" or Komang (Man or Mang for short), and fourth is "Ketut" (often elided to Tut). (The vowels are pronounced vowels similarly as in Spanish or Italian). Balinese names are rendered into Roman script by the Romanization of the Indonesian language. The spelling to pronunciation relationship is said to be "perfect" because the spelling of words was revised significantly in the 70's and/or 80's (and even more recently).

The first born is Wayan, and if there is a fifth child, he/she is often called Wayan Balik (or Wayan "again"). Of course, Balinese children/people are given other names, including a new "name" after death. However, it is important to realize that by and large, everyone does use these birth order names to refer to each other, and to call each other constantly throughout the day. "Given" names may be chosen due to, for example, the influence of popular culture or politics. Like some other Indonesian cultures, Balinese do not use family names.

The naming system is a method to instantly recognise caste. Caste, unlike in India, is relatively unimportant to the Balinese and the idea of it probably flowed into Balinese culture as close links with Hindu-Bhuddist Java evolved. The real inclusion of the caste notion probably succeeds Airlangga, a half Balinese who became king of Daha in Java, about 1000 AD.

It is possible that the naming system of the peasant farmers of Bali precedes the idea of caste. These people are largely a mix of 'native' (early proto polynesian type) Balinese and very early Hindu-Bhuddist missionaries and their followers, who did not arrive in Bali with successive waves of Javanese nobles and military rulers. They form the caste level that would be called sudra in India, that is, people outside the triwarna, or three colors (Wesya, overseers and minor aristocracy, Ksatria, nobles, kings and warriors and Bhramana, the highest caste comprising teachers, priests, writers and philosophers). This "farmer caste" comprises the vast freemasonry of the Balinese villages, as set out above, this caste uses names to denote birth position. It is an ingenious way for peasant farmers to keep track of inheritance questions, Wayan, for first born, Made for second, Nyoman for third and Ketut for fourth.

The system also differentiates (for the same reasons of inheritance rights, but perhaps also to reduce confusion) between males and females, I (pronounced 'ee'), being added as a prefix for males, and Ni (pronounced 'nee' for females). So typical names might look like I Wayan Pedjeng, or Ni Ketut Sulastri. These mean, respectively, 'first born male who's personal name is Pedjeng' (in English, moon), and 'fourth born female whose personal name is Sulastri' (in English, fine light).

The three castes, on the other hand, use a caste identifier as the first part of a name:

Wesya caste - I or Ni Gusti. Gusti literally means "leader". As members of this caste have the same preoccupation as wealthy peasants with inheritance of lands, and in any case were often families promoted from the farmer caste, they often use positional names for the birth order of their children. Sometimes they borrow the whole order of the farmer caste names, so you may find a name like I Gusti Ketut Rajendra, male of the wesya caste, fourth born, whose personal name is Rajendra)

K'satria caste - Gusti, Gusti Agung, Anak Agung, Tjokorde, Tjokorda Agung. The word Agung means "great", or "prominent". The word Tjokorde is a conjunction of the sanskrit words Tjoka and Dewa. It literally means the foot of the Gods, and is awarded to the highest members of the aristocracy. A typical name might be Anak Agung Rai, meaning a Ksatrya, whose personal name means "The Great One". It is more difficult to differentiate sexes among the k'satrya people, though personal names often tell, like Putra, or Prince, for a boy, and Putri, or Princess, for a girl.

Brahmana caste - Ida Bagus(literally 'your handsome highness') for a male brahmana and Ida Ayu (in English 'your beautiful higness') for a female brahmana. A typical name might be Ida Ayu Ngurah, meaning "Brahman woman, Beautiful highness whose personal name is Ngurah," (in English, gift from heaven).

As in all things Balinese these rules hold true everywhere . . . except where they don't. In the mountain villages and some really remote "dusun" (hamlets), one can find names that probably precede even the arrival of the first Brahmin missionaries and their followers, from Sumatra, via Java possibly as early as 600AD.

How do Balinese name their children?

Names for Balinese are very important. It’s believed that naming a child can affect a child’s life. Often the name is symbolic or carries a special meaning. In Bali, after a baby is 12 days old, a special name-giving ceremony is held called ‘ngerorasin’ (originating from the word ‘roras’ meaning ‘twelve’ in Balinese). There are several factors considered in name giving, including the child’s sex, caste, clan, birth order and the parents’ choice.

Take a look at the table below:

Traditionally, children’s names were taken directly from everyday Balinese, e.g. Manis, Wangi, Ada etc. Sometimes the name would reflect what happened when the children was born – for example if the family were going through hard times at the time of the birth, the child may have been named ‘Repot’. However, over the last 40 years or so this trend seems to have disappeared. These days, the influence is either from Java or the West. It’s not uncommon to hear of I Wayan John or Ni Nyoman Yohana. Once the child is grown up, they tend to choose to use the name which identifies them most uniquely, rather than the common Balinese part of their name.

Now you know how to give yourself a Balinese name!

Copyright@ Kulture Kid 2005
You can read all past articles of Kulture Kid at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Road trip to Gitgit waterfall!

Located close to the northern central of Bali stood the Gitgit waterfall. Plunging from a height of 35meters, it is surrounded by tropical vegetation. In 1975, Gigit waterfall is opened as a tourist destination in northern part of Bali. The waterfall has proven to withstand the test of time. Today, the Gigit still stands proud and tall overlooking the land.

It takes a 20min walk to get to Gigit, passing by shops selling clothing, souvenirs, paintings, spices, etc.

This stall sells all like of spices, very colorful and neat.

Rice padis

Balinese women workers. I bet their necks are strong enough to do a breakdance head spin.

The lady on the right asked me for money after she saw me take a photo of her. Apparently it is a norm to give them money for modelling.

The Gigit waterfall

A sudden urge to jump into the water for a swim...

And then it was another 20mins climb back to the starting point. But this time it was uphill....

On the way back to Kuta we stopped by Strawberry stop.

Did you know that the weather in northern central of Bali is suitable for planting strawberries due to its highland low temperatures?

你是否那麼地遙遠

Being in Bali after one year, I have met many people. Some from my hometown, some from other kota. But they have one thing in common - All of them left their home in search of a better living.

Leaving their family and friends behind, going to a new environment, make a living, meet new people along the way, help each other out.

I've seen friends who are lucky. Get acquainted to the environment very quickly and with some help and luck, picked up and stayed on. I've also seen friends who could not make it here, had no choice but to pack up and move on to another place.

People come and go, but life goes on.

But I'll remember that some time in this life, our path crossed. Fate.

I keep telling myself - I'm one of the lucky few...
Letting go

Sudden realization that my blog is super outdated. The previous post was more than a month old. Maybe i' ve run out of interesting things to write about... or maybe i' m just plain mischievously lazy... Heh!

Well, in the last month, i experienced how quickly a person can get to another country in minimal amount of time, considering money is not a factor. I saw how funeral is one of the occasions that brings relatives together. People that you hardly get to meet, maybe just once or twice in your life. And i realized how true it is that we only miss some people, things after we have lost it. The very last moment is the hardest part. I can still remember that moment very clearly in my mind. Every little part. Every face. Even when i recall it now, it still makes me shudder..

But most importantly... I have learned to let go.

Case Study: NEVER put all your eggs in one basket

Another course taken in my Masters in Social Science.

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" - I'm sure most of you have heard this saying, but how many of you actually put it into practice?

When i first learned about this theory, I decided not to keep all my cash in my bank account. Anything can happen in this country, especially with the poor world economy. What if the bank closed down on me? I need to keep some cash on hand to keep myself alive. That is the only form of precaution i took.

Yesterday i went surfing with a friend in the morning. We kept our wallets and my phones in my motor seat. He brought a little bit of money and towel with him in a plastic bag and left them on the beach while we went to surf. We occasionally thought about his belongings left lying around on the beach, but it's not a lot of money, he assured. 3 hours later we headed back to the beach. His belongings were still there. Money still there. So we went to my bike and drove to restaurant for lunch. But at the restaurant he couldn't find his wallet. We went back to the beach hoping that we might have dropped it somewhere at the parking area.

No sign of it. So we went to the tourist police across the road to make a police report. They issued him a copy of a police report which he can temporarily use as his ID. I took a closer look at the inner seat of JJ. Part of the plastic on the inside looked like it's be tempered with. The thief must have grabbed his wallet on top and ran off cos my stuff were deep at the bottom.

Mistake number 1: As what the Singapore police has always been reinforcing - low crime doesn't mean no crime. Should not have brought the whole wallet in the first place.

After lunch he called the bank to block his account. But all his money were gone. Taken from 4 atms from 4 different locations right after we headed to the beach. The thief had guessed his atm pin from the IDs in his wallet.

Mistake number 2: Please don't choose an atm pin that can be easily guessed from your other IDs. If you do, please please don't put your ID in the same basket as your atm card.

And don't put your keys with your ID if you have your address on your ID. Do you believe there's a chance that the thief might go search for the house if he got his hands on the keys too?

Now i took out all my overseas ID cards and residential ID from my wallet....
After a few rounds of "bei pian" session, they're returning to "reality". Sounded like i'm living in an imaginary world, haahaahaa~

That's why i always feel that i'll learn more from a master in social studies in Bali.

Anyways, i hope they enjoyed themselves. I really enjoyed their company. And thanks for the beer, best friend, lol~

Awaiting them to upload photos onto facebook so i can rip them and post them here...

I made a quickie to Carrefour to pick up my precious after work yesterday before meeting them for dinner...

It's perfect.

Check out the lines when i pass light through. But I kicked the habit after moving in with Jia cos she has her way to keep me up all night.., Hiak hiak hiak…

Recently I’m starting to succumb to it again.

Fell asleep after eating the juicy bbq chicken (raise one eyebrow at Dora) for dinner. So now here I am, at 4am, lying on my trance bed with minimal motion and settled on a rerun match between Arsenal and Manchester United.

Ideas started running through my head as my eyeball follow the little white spot across my tv screen without moving my head…

Why does Man U’s jersey have this big white tag at the back of their neck, making them look stupid..?

Arsenal’s frontline is lacking some fire power…

What is Arsenal FC named after? I mean other English football clubs are names of places in England. Never thought of this question before.

Suddenly, at the 70? minute, Ryan Giggs got substituted in. OMG! That guy is spending his whole life in Man U! He’s still fast, not as fast as before, but fast enough to made it through the Arsenal defense, scored a goal before the line’s man could blow the whistle and catches him offside.

Just as I was thinking that the only familiar face in Arsenal was Arsene Wenger, another familiar face launched into the goal post and saved the Arsenal goalkeeper from danger. I pulled my hair, eyes wide, jaws dropped. That annoying Silvestre from Man U is now in Arsenal!!!

PS. As I try to fall back to sleep, I’m now watching Thierry Henry playing for Barcelona against this yellow team. Amazed by the turnover rate in soccer. The only constant is the manager of the teams.
